  1. Place the peppercorns, allspice, thyme, and bay leaf in a piece of cheesecloth. Gather the edges of the cheesecloth together, and tie it with twine into a small bag. In a large saucepot over medium-high heat, place the cheesecloth, potatoes, carrots, leeks, onions, chicken broth, and chicken. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, and simmer uncovered for 25 minutes. Turn the chicken over and cook for 20 minutes more, or until the internal temperature of the chicken registers 170°F on an instant-read thermometer and the vegetables are tender.
  2. Remove the chicken and vegetables with a slotted spoon. Set them aside, and keep them warm. Discard the cheesecloth bag. Return the broth to a boil, and cook for about 15 minutes, or until it's reduced to 4 cups. Remove from the heat.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour, reduce the heat, and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Whisk in 1 cup of the broth mixture, reserving the remaining broth for future use. Whisk in the milk. Cook, stirring frequently, for about 8 minutes, or until the broth thickens. Adjust the taste with salt and black pepper.
  4. Remove the chicken meat from its bones and discard the bones and the skin. Chop the chicken into small pieces. Arrange the reserved vegetables on a platter, and top with the chopped chicken. Spoon the sauce over the chicken and vegetables. Sprinkle with chives, if using.

Large Ceramic Table Lamps For Living Room

Large Ceramic Table Lamps For Living Room

eye candy table lamp, terrazzo

MADE.com

Table lamps offer a soft alternative to harsh overhead lights, all whilst creating a cosy atmosphere and adding a decorative touch to your space.

Although they're typically used as part of a layered ambient lighting scheme, table lamps with adjustable heads are ideal for task lighting, such as reading, writing or other work.

Bedside table lamps, desk lamps and table lamps for living rooms are the most popular, but table lamps are also great for sideboards, shelves and bookcases. In fact, contemporary and modern table lamps in particular bring a design statement to your living space, making them both functional and aesthetically pleasing, even when not in use.

Bedside table lamps

A table lamp needs to be functional, especially for winding down at night or when you might want to read a book, but it also needs to fit in with your existing decor. You'll be spoilt for choice with all the designs on offer. It's always recommended to have two table lamps, one for either side of your bed, as it's great for symmetry and key for bedroom Feng Shui. However, one table lamp works just as well in a bedroom. If space is limited, you could pop it on your chest of drawers or dressing table, for example.

Desk lamps

With working from home now the new normal, kitting out your workspace is top priority, and that includes having the right task lighting. A desk lamp is ideal for reading, writing, computer work and more. Essentially, you just need a bright light with minimal glare (desk lamps fitted with dimmer switches are ideal as it gives you more control over the brightness level), and an adjustable head so you can tilt it to suit the task at hand.

Table lamps for living rooms

If you want a table lamp for your living room, you're likely to want it on a sideboard or console table, or next to a sofa or armchair for reading. You're likely to have more light sources in your living room, such as a floor lamp or wall lights, so ensure your table lamp works in harmony with other artificial light sources.

What table lamp designs are the most popular?

Glass table lamps, plus gold and grey lamps are particularly popular, but so are ceramic table lamps and designs which exude a luxe appeal – so metallics and marble, and woven styles like raffia and rattan. Contemporary, colourful and retro table lamps have increased in popularity too as we've become more confident and experimental with our interiors, and therefore keen to reflect our character and personality. It really depends on your personal style though, so always choose a design that you truly love and one that will work with your existing decor.

Table lamp shades

When shopping for table lamps, double check that the lamp shade is included. It could turn out that you're actually buying the lamp base, which enables you to personalise it by buying a shade separately. Remember for sizing, when buying a lamp shade, the shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base.

Whether you want to spread light around your living space with a diffused soft glow or illuminate dark corners and nooks, shop the best stylish table lamps for your home here.

Cool Living Adjustable Stand Up Desk

Cool Living Adjustable Stand Up Desk

Standing desks aren't anything new. In fact, workspaces designed for you to stand tall at, rather than hunch over from a swivel chair, have been around for nearly a decade. But, now that you spend eight hours a day feeling the strain of hunching over a laptop at your kitchen table, the posture-adjusting properties of these solutions have got you intrigued – right?

If so, I feel you. After my umpteenth moan about my lockdown home working setup, I took the plunge and ordered a make known as a Varidesk. (Yes, I am aware that being a Women's Health editor with a standing desk is a hideous cliché, much like a love of Lululemon leggings and expensive water bottles. But stick with me, here.)

OK, what actually is a standing desk?

It's nothing more complicated than its name suggests a desk that allows you to work while standing up. They were designed to help with productivity, energy – and possibly even longevity.

Standing up all day sounds tiring?

Not all standing desks require you to spend the full working day on your feet.

Some desks are on hydraulics; you simply press a button and increase the height of the desk to take it from sitting level to standing. Or, you can get standing desk converters. These sit on top of your normal desk to turn it into a sit-stand workstation at less cost than a whole desk replacement.

Right now, I'm using the desk converter to turn my kitchen table or bedroom chest of drawers into a workspace. Needs must.

Sure. But why would you want to stand up all day?

I first jumped on the standing desk bandwagon when I joined the WH squad.

Back then, HR only issued a standing desk if you had a health reason to warrant it. I didn't. So when my teammates exited the building and curiosity got the better of me, I'd slip into their standing grave. It only took a couple of times of desk hopping for me to understand the hype. Sitting down for most of the day is not a good thing.

What are the benefits of standing desks?

1. Improved mood

One study found that standing desks can lower feelings of stress and fatigue while improving mood and energy levels. I agree. It's hard to feel stressed when standing as it's impossible to not move your feet to Savage by Megan Thee Stallion. Your workspace becomes your dance floor. Fact.

2. Reduced back pain

Creaky necks and sore backs are a common office woe. Even among gym tribes with faultless mobility routines. Humans just weren't designed to sit in front of a computer all day.

For years, I couldn't shake (or stretch away) my sore right shoulder. Not even a vicious looking foam roller nixed the niggles. But after a stint at the standing desk, I noticed my shoulder ached less. I requested a desk setup review and a month later, I was standing around 50% of the day and moaning about my pains 99% less. The solve? Better posture while typing as I was no longer over-reaching for the mouse or slumping in my chair.

I'm not the only one to notice an improvement in long term-pain. This research found that using a standing desk reduced upper back and neck pain in those in the study by 54% after just 4 weeks

3. Increased wellbeing

Hands up who's put off getting a drink of water or going to the loo until you've replied to one more email? I see you. When sitting, it's easy not to move for hours. The opposite happens when standing; you're more likely to hop to the kitchen or pop to the toilet. These small tasks no longer feel like a big deal.

4. Calorie burn

While a solid workout regimen will always be the best way to torch cals, standing gives you health credit. According to Varidesk, if you use a standing desk for half of your working day, in hourly sit-stand intervals you'll burn off an additional 50 calories per hour, or 200 per day. Over a week that is 1,000 calories burnt and if you used it all year you'd burn around 52,000 extra calories, that is the equivalent as running over 18 marathons.

I clocked this extra burn on my fitness tracker - not only did my day stats read higher, but I got in extra steps (getting that 10th glass of H2O) without noticing.

5. Decreased risk of heart disease

Prolonged periods of sitting on your bum are found to increase the risk of heart disease by up to 147%, according to this study.

Interesting. B ut how does a standing desk work at home?

Like the rest of the country, I was forced to find my feet fast with the new WFH life. Even after just three weeks of typing, editing and replying to emails from the kitchen table my makeshift setup took its toll.

And although my Apple watch shamed reminded me into standing up each hour it wasn't enough. My aforementioned shoulder ache came back and I started to get lower back pain.

My kitchen table is normal height – but not the correct height for a workspace. According to the NHS, your screen should be at eye level and wrists and forearms straight and level with the floor. Mine was not. Plus, our kitchen chairs, as lovely as they are, can not be adjusted. More bad news for posture (knees should be slightly lower than your hips).

VariDesk Pro Plus 36 by Vari – Height Adjustable Standing Desk Converter

VARIDESK amazon.co.uk

£365.00

Adding a sit-stand desk into the household has been a game-changer. It transforms where we eat or sleep into a makeshift office and has cut the gripes about sore shoulders.

Plus, as it's not permanent it can be stored under furniture or slipped down the side of a cupboard when not in use.

Right now, I don't think there is a perfect working setup. That's unless you're one of the lucky few with one of those cabin-like garden offices complete with aircon and a Bose soundbar. Not you? No. It's all about doing what we can with what we've got (or order online) in the pursuit of optimal health.

I say, stand up to WFH life.

If you're looking to invest, here's a long term option we tested

Nine months into working from home and life doesn't look like it's going to change fast. In fact, graduating from the kitchen table to a full-time at-home desk seems to be more of a physical necessity by the day. Pinched shoulders, sore lower backs, cricked necks – the list goes on. Digital Fitness Writer Morgan Fargo tried one of the most specced out on the market. Enter: the FlexiSpot Dual Motor EQ4 standing desk. Scroll on for her full review.

Assembly

Originally, I had been told this desk would take 5-minutes to assemble. Let me start by saying that is categorically not true. By the time I had unpacked everything and got my ducks in a row the stopwatch already showed 12 minutes. But, it really doesn't take long. A painless 30 minutes max. Plus, there's only a handful of steps to set it up – perfect for even the Ikea-incompetent amongst us.

standing desk

Once everything was in place, I was ready to roll. Plugging in the control panel, I FaceTimed my mum to show her my new motorised workspace. She was impressed. Now to actually use it.

Use

The first day at my new desk and it felt as exciting as the first day of school. Finally, a dedicated area to work, create and operate from. If I wanted to have six copies of Women's Health strewn over it, I could! It was no longer a shared space! I was free!

standing desk

I stood for the first half of that first day. Not least because it was a change from the previous nine months of working from home. The desk moved easily, with exceptionally little noise and speed. In a flash, I could take the level back to sitting. The whole operation was thrilling.

The desk's control panel has seven buttons to move the desk up, down or set custom levels you can set forever, which meant I wouldn't have to faff finding the perfect position every day. The dream? The dream. (Also great if you share the space with another WFH-er and don't want to fight over the right setting.)

Value for money

Currently, the FlexiSpot EQ4 standing desk is on sale for £249.99. But, be warned, that's just for the motorised frame. The desktop will set you back another £130. You can choose from either black, silver or grey for the frame and four different desktops (white, black, maple and mahogany).

EQ4 Dual Motor Standing Desk

flexispot.co.uk

So, the big question, is it worth it? One thousand per cent. It's chic, subtle and makes working from home less of an assault on my soon to be wrecked shoulders and back. It's easily adjustable, large enough to feel like a proper workspace and makes the separation between work-life and home-life that much more real. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you've saved precious coins this year not commuting into the office every day.

Get around it people, your neck will thank you.

How to Decorate a Small Living Room

Every small living space offers design challenges. While it's important to make all of the rooms in your home functional, the living room is especially key because many people spend a lot of their time at home in the living room. From selecting furniture that is an appropriate scale for the space to maximizing hidden storage solutions to strategically placing a mirror to add depth and light, there are an extensive range of practical and easily attainable design ideas that will help you create the living room of your dreams in your small space.

6 Small Living Room Ideas

1. Select Furniture to Fit the Existing Space

2. Consider Hidden Storage

3. Create a Focal Point

4. Add Light and Depth

5. Don't Be Afraid of Color

6. Take Advantage of Vertical Space

The trunk serves as a coffee table and storage piece while adding a funky vintage touch to the living room.

1. Select Furniture to Fit the Existing Space

  • Determine Scale and Configuration

When you're working with a compact living room, large-scale furniture often isn't an option. Be realistic about the space. For example, if an oversized recliner won't fit, choose a pair of smaller chairs. Many people also get hung up on common furniture configurations. For example, nothing says that you need a full-sized sofa in your living room. A love seat paired with a bench and an armchair may work more naturally in your space.

  • Think Multifunctional

Choosing multifunctional pieces will also make the most of your living room. For example, a bench with storage will provide seating while housing pillows and blankets. A coffee table or console table makes a great addition to a living room but only when it makes sense for the space. Your small living room may be better suited for two small tables that open up the space and can be moved as needed to accommodate different functions.

  • Consider Floating Furniture and Low Seating

Floating furniture and low seating can make all the difference when it comes to keeping the space open and flowing. Design a floating furniture arrangement in the center of the room instead of pushing pieces up against the walls. Install shelves and other built-in components off the floor to create the illusion of space. If you choose low seating, select pieces that don't distract from the focal statement in the room. For example, a pair of low stools in front of the mantel will keep the fireplace as the focus of the living room.

The wall length built-in keeps this narrow living room streamlined and clutter free.

Concealed storage is a great way to house items in the living room without creating a cluttered space. Furniture pieces that boast concealed storage, such as an ottoman with built-in storage, are a great option. You may also want to consider decor pieces that do double duty as storage, such as colorful baskets or jars. Do you have a hard time finding concealed storage pieces that don't take up a ton of floor space? Think about biting the bullet and devoting a single wall to built-in storage. To further streamline the storage, keep your items in the built-in hidden behind doors or curtains.

3. Create a Focal Point

A focal point is ideal for drawing people into a space while making it more uplifting and even sophisticated. Think about focusing your living room around a fireplace, sofa, coffee table, artwork, or mirror. Once you've settled on your focal point, design the rest of the living room around your statement piece to pull the entire look together.

The mirrors reflect the whole space, making it appear larger, while bringing more natural light into the room.

4. Add Light and Depth

Small living rooms with flat features and dark corners look dreary, even when they boast unique furniture and wall hangings. Maximize the natural light in the room, and don't be afraid to add artificial light sources as well. You'll bring even more light and depth into your compact living room with wallpaper and strategically placed mirrors and plants. Purely decorative mirrors still pack a visual punch and draw extra light into the space.

The floral theme ties the colored items in the room together.

5. Don't Be Afraid of Color

Many people steer clear of color in small living rooms, believing that it will overwhelm the space. While there is nothing wrong with designing a small living room that features neutral shades, color can make the space appear larger. Select a color scheme with a maximum of three shades to create a unified aesthetic. If you want to use additional colors, incorporate them as accents. Typically lighter shades make a space look larger, but careful use of darker shades takes the style and drama in the room up a notch.

When you paint a small living room, select a satin or semigloss finish to reflect the light. If you want to tie the color scheme in the room together without painting or buying new furniture, consider an area rug. Layer a rug over carpeting to make the room feel cozier or conceal dark flooring with a brightly colored rug to lighten up a dark space.

This set of floating shelves draw the eye up while adding room for knick knacks in otherwise wasted corner space.

6. Take Advantage of Vertical Space

Build up instead of out to maximize the available space. When you hang curtains, place the curtain rods right below the ceiling. Then choose curtains that extend all the way to the floor to make the ceiling look higher. If you're selecting art or other wall hangings, consider designing a gallery wall or choosing a few large pieces that fill the whole space. Do you have an odd nook that currently serves little or no purpose in the living room? Think about constructing shelves to simultaneously add storage and draw the eye upward.

Small Family Room Design

Finally, creating the ideal flow for your small living room is an ongoing process. It often takes weeks, or even months, of living with a living room arrangement to determine what is and isn't working. Don't be afraid to keep making tweaks and adjusting the layout until you find a arrangement that suits you and your family.

How To Hide A Tv In A Formal Living Room

How To Hide A Tv In A Formal Living Room

9 History-Making TV Shows

Whether a show is a total guilty pleasure or a highbrow icon of Prestige TV, a feel-good sitcom or a high-concept drama, television has the ability not only to represent and mirror society but teach us some valuable lessons about acceptance and openness.

That's why we've decided to take a look back at TV history and highlight a few titles that made TV a more representative, progressive and diverse place.

I Love Lucy

Lucille Ball in "I Love Lucy" in 1952. Photo Courtesy: CBS

Back in the 1950s, Lucille Ball's sitcom I Love Lucy , in which her character was married to Ball's real-life husband Desi Arnaz, broke a big TV taboo. When the actress became pregnant the couple thought the show, which had aired for one season on CBS, would be canceled or put on hiatus until after she gave birth . Pregnancy wasn't a thing that happened on TV at the time. And writing around an actress's pregnancy hasn't always been as easy as getting Scandal's Kerry Washington a few fabulous coats.

In the end, Ball's pregnancy was written into the show, an approach that's been used plenty of times in scripted TV since then. The writers would have to avoid the word "pregnant" though, considered too vulgar to air. The episode in which Lucy's pregnancy was announced aired in 1952. It was titled "Lucy Is Enceinte" because apparently it's OK to refer to the "p" word in French. The characters used verbal workarounds like "we're having a baby" or "blessed event" to imply Lucy's state.

Star Trek

Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner in "Star Trek." Original airdate of the episode: November 22, 1968. Photo Courtesy: CBS via Getty Images

Star Trek: The Original Series  not only garnered a devoted following that's since spun several sequel series, spin-offs and movie franchises over the decades, it was also a rare example of diversity on screen. Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, a Starfleet Lieutenant and communications officer, making the show one of the first to feature a Black woman not portraying a servant. George Takei played Lieutenant Sulu, the U.S.S. Enterprise's helmsman. H aving a Japanese American actor in such a visible role just two decades after World War II, a time defined by America's anti-Asian policies and racism,  also highlighted the show's commitment to representation.

Then there's the kiss. Uhura and Captain Kirk (William Shatner) kissed in a 1968 episode while under the influence of aliens. You can argue whether that was the first interracial kiss on screen or not, but it sure proved the show's dedication to the depiction of a plural and diverse society. And it confirmed Kirk's famous words: "Where I come from, size, shape or color makes no difference."

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Mary Tyler Moore in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" circa 1975. Photo Courtesy: Getty Images

This seven-season sitcom that aired between 1970 and 1977 broke a few molds. It starred Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards, a single woman in her 30s focused on her career in a TV station. The show was created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns but boasted a writers' room where there was also a significant number of women, especially  for the period . Treva Silverman was one of the first women hired as a writer for the show, and, importantly, she shared her own experiences to inform the characters' lives.

Other than in the writers' room, the show was groundbreaking because it focused on the life of an independent career-woman who didn't care about getting married. And although certain themes weren't treated in the same, direct way we've grown accustomed to in the past few decades, the show made suggestions about Mary having an active sexual life and taking the pill.

It also paved the way for other career-women-centered shows like Murphy Brown, Ally McBeal, 30 Rock  and even Sex and the City .

Ellen

Ellen DeGeneres and Lisa Darr in "Ellen." Episode air date: July 22, 1998. Photo Courtesy: Walt Disney Television via Getty Images

The sitcom Ellen , starring Ellen DeGeneres as Ellen Morgan, was on its fourth season when it aired "The Puppy Episode" in 1997. In it Morgan was attracted to a character played by Laura Dern and she came out as gay to her friends. The "Yep, I'm gay" moment was big for American TV because up until then gay characters had been relegated to secondary, mostly one-note roles. DeGeneres' character announcing her sexual orientation coincided with the actress herself also formally coming out with a Time magazine cover and interview.

DeGeneres' figure has been under scrutiny in recent months regarding allegations of a toxic work environment in her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show , but in the 1990s her sitcom cleared the way for further LGBTQ representation on TV. The sitcom Will & Grace  started airing in 1998 with Eric McCormack playing gay lawyer Will and best friend to Grace (Debra Messing). Then there was Queer as Folk on Showtime in 2000. It was an adaptation of a British show of the same name and depicted a group of gay friends — and their sex lives — in a nuanced way.

The Banks — and their Philadelphia-born nephew Will Smith — weren't the first Black family on a successful TV sitcom with international success. The Cosby Show reigned first with eight seasons, running from 1984 to 1992, before Bill Cosby's sex crimes came to light.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air started airing in 1990 and was loosely based on Smith's life. The six-season sitcom jump-started Smith's career. But other than making the protagonist a movie star, the show also highlighted the life of a wealthy, stable and college-educated Black family, widening the scope of how Black characters were represented on TV.

And even though it was a sitcom, the show also tackled serious topics like Police profiling — Will and Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) get pulled over by the Police while driving a Mercedes Benz — drug use, gun violence, date rape, HIV, racism and other issues.

Ugly Betty

The dramedy Ugly Betty , which ran on ABC for four seasons between 2006 and 2010, was an adaptation of the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea . The show put a Mexican American family front and center in a primetime show. It also starred America Ferrera, who played an unstylish but hard-working woman who ends up working at a fashion magazine. Tony Plana played Betty's dad and he often mixed Spanish and English dialogue in the show, the way a lot of Hispanic families do. And Ana Ortiz played Hilda, Betty's older sister. The show garnered praise for its representation of Latinas on TV.

But it also addressed topics like body image and Hilda's teenage son coming out as gay. Besides winning three Emmys, Ugly Betty won two Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards.

Ortiz is once again involved in a history-making TV show: Hulu's Love, Victor. The show centers on Victor — a half-Colombian-American, half-Puerto Rican gay teenager — and his struggles to tell his religious family he's gay. Ortiz plays Victor's mom.

Orange Is the New Black

What started as the adaptation of Piper Kerman's memoir about the months she spent in prison for a decade-old drug conviction, ended up becoming much more than that. As Jenji Kohan's ( Weeds) show progressed, it stopped focusing on Piper (Taylor Schilling) and opened the scope to an incredibly diverse ensemble cast of women. The show, which aired for seven seasons on Netflix from 2013 to 2019, became a refreshing blend of tales from all the women who made it.

In later seasons, the series also commented on the for-profit prison system and immigration. But its inclusion of women of all ages, races and backgrounds is what made it stand out in the first place. Plus, the series has helped cement the careers of actresses Uzo Aduba ( Mrs. America , In Treatment ), Natasha Lyonne ( Russian Doll ), Samira Wiley ( The Handmaid's Tale ) and Laverne Cox ( Promising Young Woman).

Pose

FX's Pose  not only meant a front-row seat to ballroom culture. The show, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals, is set in the late '80s and early '90s and depicts the lives of a group of Black and Latina transgender women and their gay friends. They're in the midst of the AIDS epidemic and try to carve a place for themselves in a society that turns a blind eye or simply rejects them, all while they reshape the definition of family.

The show made headlines when it first debuted in 2018 for having the largest transgender cast of any scripted series. Not only that, the show enlisted writer and activist Janet Mock, and, soon after, she became the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an episode of television. Mock has written and directed several Pose 's episodes since. Pose 's best-known face is perhaps that of Billy Porter. The Emmy-winning actor has become a red carpet fixture thanks to the show's success. He's taken the mantle from his character Pray Tell and helped redefine what masculinity means.

Rutherford Falls

This Peacock sitcom that aired its first season in April 2021 is co-created and executive produced by Ed Helms, Michael Schur ( Parks and Recreation ) and Sierra Teller Ornelas ( Superstore ). Teller Ornelas is Navajo and one of the five Native writers on this show. In fact, Rutherford Falls has one of the largest Indigenous writers' rooms in history, according to Peacock.

Native American representation is also a big part of Rutherford Falls  in front of the cameras with actors Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes playing members of the fictional Minishonka Nation. Rutherford Falls has been praised for its depiction of Native American characters and cultures and inclusive representation. The show also stars Helms as Nathan Rutherford and Jesse Leigh as Bobbie Yang, Nathan's non-binary executive assistant.

Rutherford Falls  has only aired one season so far but it'll be interesting to see if it opens new opportunities for Native American narratives told by Indigenous creators and actors.

Don't Throw Away Your Old TV, Give It Away Instead

CC0/StockSnap/Pixabay

If your TV has developed mechanical faults or is way past its heyday, it might be time to dispose of it. Perhaps you have bought a new TV, boasting the latest technology features. Getting rid of your old TV set will create space for the new piece of entertainment technology in your house. A modern TV makes events such as watching the football game with friends much more enjoyable.

While you might be tempted to just place your old TV in the garbage, disposing of your TV is not so easy. You have to take into account the laws around the disposal of electronic waste. In addition, you might be able to find a second home for your unwanted TV set. As a result, giving away your TV might be the best way of getting rid of it.

Why Throwing Your TV Away Could Be Illegal

The first major reason you cannot just throw away your old television is that it's probably illegal, though this depends on your state. Television sets, like many other electronics gadgets, contain potentially harmful toxins. This makes their safe disposal a matter of public safety. TV sets contain lead, copper, mercury, cadmium, and other hazardous materials.

As a result of the toxic nature of the materials used in TV manufacturing, many states now have laws governing their proper disposal. For example, the state of Hawaii covers this in its Electronic Device and Television Recycling Law. Likewise, Vermont has the Vermont E-Cycles statute that provides for the recycling of electronic equipment. Such laws across the country generally prohibit dumping of TVs as well as computers and other electronic equipment.

TV Disposal Costs Money

The proper disposal of your old TV unit can cost you upwards of $100, possibly more. This is because you have to hand over the TV to a manufacturer or other electronics disposal company. These companies have programs in place to process old electronics. Materials such as copper and metals will be melted and reused in the manufacture of other goods. Other materials such as glass will be separated from metals and reused for other purposes. However, this process is costly. For the end user, the annoying part is that disposing of your TV in this way will cost you, sometimes, just as much as buying a brand new TV. This is another good reason to give the TV away whenever possible.

Giving Your TV Away to Goodwill or Salvation Army

Your first option for giving the TV away is to donate it, if possible, to a local charity store. For example, in the past, organizations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army have run programs where TVs could be donated. They would then gift these TVs to local families who wanted a TV but were too poor to afford one.

Given the new laws on the disposal of electronics, charity organizations might refuse electronics items that are too old. This is to avoid the disposal costs if they are unable to give the item away themselves. However, you should inquire with the charity organizations in your local area to see if the TV is a fit for them.

Giving Your TV Away As a Free Giveaway on Craigslist

In case you are unable to give the TV away to a charity organization, you can often sell off the TV on Craigslist or other online marketplaces. Even better, list the item as a free giveaway. Craigslist gives you access to a wide audience of people in your town. Chances are, the TV might be a great find for a young person in your area who wants one but cannot afford the latest models. When listing your item, make it clear that the recipient will need to come pick up the item from your house, that way you don't have to pay the shipping to send the TV to them.

Giving Your TV Away to a Neighbor or Organizing a Yard-Sale

A final option for giving your TV away is to give it to a neighbor or organize a yard sale. With a yard sale, you invite your neighbors and other local people to come to your house on a set date. You can often sell off unwanted items such as old furniture, TVs, washing machines and many others. Be aware, though, that with a yard sale you will likely sell many things below market value. This is an issue if you plan to sell valuable items. However, if you have an unwanted old TV, this is a good way to get it a new home without costing you money for disposal.

There are many wonderful things about getting older, but going through the aging process also means you might start experiencing bodily fatigue, achy muscles and joint pain more often than you used to. Because of this, you might have difficulty moving and exercising. But you don't have to let that slow you down. It's vital for older adults to get regular physical activity — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity — but what if you want to gently ease into more movement without exacerbating aches and pains?

One way to get started is to practice chair yoga. Chair yoga exercises are a perfect way for you to stretch and get moving, all while you're safely seated in a chair — no need to get down onto the floor. This type of yoga can help loosen your muscles, improve circulation, build strength and even relieve stress. Even better? You can do it any time from the comfort of your own home.

Chair yoga, or sitting yoga, for seniors is a modified version of traditional hatha yoga to help relieve body aches and stay healthy in a safe and accessible way. Hatha yoga is a form of this type of exercise that's more gentle and more slowly paced with a focus on stretching and breathing. It's ideal for anyone who lives with pain that could make more complex yoga poses difficult, such as chronic pain, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, chair yoga can also be ideal for people who spend long hours sitting in a chair.

Many seniors find their lives become sedentary with each passing year because movement may become more tiring, uncomfortable or painful. Practicing chair yoga regularly can provide a way to prevent or relieve those issues. It's a low-impact way to get the blood in your body flowing and stretch your muscles.

In terms of equipment, all you need for chair yoga is a stable, armless chair. Make sure the chair is resting on a flat, stable surface and that you're wearing comfortable clothes that allow for a generous range of motion. Chair yoga can also be ideal if you're a wheelchair user.

Benefits of Chair Yoga for Seniors

Getting regular exercise can add years to your life and slow the aging process. However, many types of exercise can become more difficult to perform with age. High-impact exercises like weightlifting, running and other types of intense cardio can be particularly hard on your joints and muscles. Chair yoga provides a way to get your body moving without stressing your joints with hard impacts like running does. Practicing chair yoga for 20-30 minutes per session several times a week can provide significant health benefits.

First of all, it can help manage and reduce pain. One recent study from the Journal of American Geriatrics Society found that chair yoga effectively helped relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis. Furthermore, chair yoga involves stretching the neck, upper back, lower back, shoulders, arms, legs, knees and ankles without much impact on the joints. This not only reduces stiffness, tension and pain, but it can also help to improve mobility in the long run.

Another potential benefit is improved flexibility, which can make it easier to perform regular movements as you go about your everyday routine. Being flexible also can improve muscle coordination and posture and lower the risk of future muscle soreness and injuries. Chair yoga helps improve your strength and balance as well, meaning falls become a lot less likely. Having a strong body also increases your ability to withstand injury.

Chair yoga even has benefits for your mental wellbeing. As with traditional yoga, chair yoga involves a lot of deep breathing, which can help clear your mind similarly to meditation. This often results in reduced stress, a better mood, less anxiety and a calmer state of mind.

Try These Great Chair Yoga Routines

There's no need to leave your home, join a gym or go to chair yoga classes at a fitness studio — plenty of outstanding chair yoga routines are available online. Some are written out with pictures, while others are instructional video workouts you can follow along with.

If you're unsure about the idea of following along with a chair yoga video, you can simply make your own routine consisting of exercises sitting in a chair. Here are some great options for all skill levels:

The Forward Bend Pose involves bending over so your chest is resting on your thighs and your hands are reaching towards the floor. If you can, place your palms fully on the floor. To get the most out of this stretch, hold for 30 seconds or more, taking slow, long, deep breaths.

The Chair Pigeon Pose is another great chair yoga stretch. Sitting up straight with your knees aligned above your ankles, bring your left ankle to your right thigh. If you can, try bending forward as low as possible to make the stretch more intense. Hold here for several deep breaths before doing the same pose with the opposite leg.

For the Chair Spinal Twist, begin by sitting sideways on your chair facing right. Twist your torso to the right while grabbing the back of the chair with both hands to anchor yourself in that position. Stay here for several deep breaths. Then, switch to the left side.

The simple Overhead Stretch starts with you sitting up straight in your chair, facing forward with your arms relaxed and hanging by your sides. As you take a deep breath in, slowly begin to raise your arms up towards the ceiling. Once they're fully extended upward, take a moment to engage your core and ensure your back is straight. Hold this position for a few seconds. Let out a long exhale while slowly lowering your arms back down. Repeat this a few more times.

You might find it easier and more convenient to follow an exercise video routine that provides instructions and demonstrates the different positions for you. There are plenty of free chair yoga classes and routines for seniors to choose from. Here are some that come highly recommended:
